Here's Saint Dorothy, a commission piece, for a good friend!
She is an interesting Saint, whose story has been beautifully told, and was popular for many years. Having made a personal vow of virginity, she refused to marry, or to sacrifice to pagan idols. She was tried, tortured, and sentenced to death for her faith by the prefect Sapricius. The pagan lawyer named Theophilus, said to her in mockery, Bride of Christ, send me some fruits from your bridegrooms garden. Before she was executed, she sent him, by a six-year-old boy who is thought to have been an angel, her headress which had the fragrance of roses and fruits. Seeing this gift, and the miraculous messenger who brought them, Theophilus converted, and was martyred himself. This story has been variously enlarged through the years. In some places, trees are blessed on her feast day because of her connection with a blooming, fruitful miracle.
In my version, she is not shown suffering, but full of joy, and offering us an apple from a basket of roses and fruit. Typically, she is shown in icons with fruit, flowers and palm leaves, like the ones I placed behind her. This one, funny enough, came out with the colors of an old, 1940's pin-up advertisement. Maybe something having to do with sunny Florida-that kind of feel. That similarity was totally accidental, but I think it makes this piece a really different kind of saint icon, and catches one off guard because of it.

Great picure! it looks so colorful and Happy. Very mediterranean. I think you should work on the teeth a little more (they look a little bit like dentures). but other than that its beautiful! (though I don't think I could paint teeth better than that!)

Thanks so much LynxMaid! And your comments are much appreciated. Teeth and open smiles, as most will tell ya, are super tricky, and I am usually hardly ever satisfied with them at the end-even if other's are. This model's teeth were a tad prominant, thus that sort of look I think. Thanks again for your kind words!
